GoGuardian Beacon Leads in Responsible AI By Earning ISO Certification

As AI increasingly permeates every corner of K-12 edtech tools, district leaders have a new responsibility added to their plate: Ensuring the solutions they purchase for their schools are built safely and responsibly.
Now more than ever, they’ll find themselves asking, "How are these systems built? How are they tested? And how do we know we can trust them…especially when student safety is involved?”
At GoGuardian, we’ve always prioritized data privacy and AI leadership when building our products. That’s why we are proud to announce that GoGuardian Beacon’s Active Planning Alerts system has earned ISO 42001 certification, a newly established international standard for responsible AI.
What is ISO AI Certification 42001?
ISO 42001 is a new framework focused specifically on AI governance. As Teddy Hartman, Senior Director of Privacy & Trust for GoGuardian, explains, “It’s focused on responsible design, development, and deployment of AI systems…from the data we use to train models all the way through testing, impact assessments, risk mitigation, and transparency with customers.”
To earn this certification, a product must be evaluated through the full lifecycle of an AI system. That includes how models are trained, how outcomes are monitored, and how organizations ensure fairness and transparency.
Why GoGuardian Beacon?
The decision to pursue this certification specifically for GoGuardian Beacon’s Active Planning Alerts was intentional. “For this initial ISO AI Certification, we decided to focus on our Active Planning Alert feature because it has the most direct, real-world implications. It’s the feature that can potentially save someone’s life,” Hartman said.
GoGuardian Beacon’s role in identifying students at risk of self-harm or violence means its outputs can trigger immediate responses. Because of this, it made sense to prioritize this system for the most rigorous validation.
Built on a firm foundation
One of the most notable aspects of GoGuardian Beacon obtaining this certification is that it reflects a long-standing commitment to responsible AI practices across the organization. “Achieving the ISO 42001 certification for our Active Planning Alert feature is a significant milestone that formalizes the rigorous, responsible AI practices we’ve prioritized from the beginning,” said Teddy Hartman, Senior Director of Privacy & Trust for GoGuardian. “It positions GoGuardian Beacon as a leader in responsible student safety technology and assures school leaders that our most critical, life-saving feature meets the highest international standards for trustworthy AI.”
In short, it’s not that safe AI practices were added for certification; they were already strongly embedded in GoGuardian’s culture. For instance, our Responsible AI Principles guide the way our products are built and maintained from inception.
Beyond current legislation
The certification is closely tied to the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act, which requires safeguards for high-risk AI systems, but its relevance extends far beyond any one state.
Responsible AI has quickly become a top concern for school leaders, much like student data privacy did over the past decade. “Districts are asking critical questions about responsible AI to understand how we use data, ensure the output is valid, and manage these high-stakes systems,” Hartman said. “As the leader in the industry, GoGuardian is driving the change by achieving ISO 42001. This certification is the definitive proof that empowers admins, educators, and caregivers to confidently adopt a student safety tool built on global best practices.”
While AI governance is fast becoming a baseline expectation, our approach is what sets us apart. Our customers deserve a partner that takes AI seriously by designing and developing systems responsibly. “The more we can do as vendors to show how earnest we are, the more comfortable admins, district leaders, educators, and caregivers will become.”
What this means for schools
The bottom line: Obtaining this certification was about instilling confidence in those who trust GoGuardian with student safety.
That includes a promise that:
- AI systems are designed with oversight and accountability
- Student safety tools are tested for fairness and reliability
- Vendors can demonstrate, not just claim, responsible practices
In high-stakes scenarios, that confidence is essential. “We know schools use GoGuardian Beacon to help identify students who are in imminent danger. We take that seriously, and want to make sure it’s protecting everyone equally.”
