Commonly asked questions
We want you to feel comfortable with how we treat you. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most:
Parents & Guardians,
We understand how much you, as a school leader, value access to educational technologies that better teach students and empower educators in this digital century. At the same time, we know that you care about student privacy while using these technologies. We take student privacy and data security seriously, with industry safeguards and privacy policies that put you in control of your school’s data. Here’s some information about our privacy practices, answers to questions you may have, and other privacy resources below. Please feel free to reach out to us directly for further information.
Does GoGuardian own student data?
No. Schools own their Personal Student Information. We provide powerful, easy-to-use content filtering and classroom management tools to help keep students safe online.
Does GoGuardian sell Personal Student Information or advertise using Personal Student Information?
No. GoGuardian does not sell Personal Student Information, nor do we use Personal Student Information to target advertisements or target marketing to students or anyone else. Also, we will not use this information for any purposes prohibited by the Family Educational and Privacy Rights Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99.3) ("FERPA"), California Business & Professions Code section 22584 ("SOPIPA"), and the California Education Code section 49073.1.
How does GoGuardian help schools communicate about GoGuardian to parents/guardians and students?
In addition, we understand transparency is of equal importance to schools, as they each know their students, teachers, and parent community best. Because of this, we have taken steps to help you communicate about GoGuardian to parents and students. For example, GoGuardian’s Parent Communication Center provides template letters for your school to use to help inform parents. GoGuardian also recommends that each school send home: (1) the GoGuardian COPPA Notice & Consent Form (even if your school only serves students over thirteen years of age); and (2) your school’s acceptable technology use agreement signed by students and their parents/guardians that explains your school’s filtering and monitoring policies as well as how students should be using their school accounts and devices.
GoGuardian's shield logo also appears as an icon near the top of the Chrome browser to the right of the URL bar (where you see the web address in Chrome). GoGuardian uses its logo to provide transparency to students—a reminder that they are logged into their school’s account, subject to their school’s acceptable technology use agreement.
What steps does GoGuardian take to protect student information?
We are fully committed to the security and privacy of student data and protecting you and your school from attempts to compromise it. We utilize stringent technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect all personal information, including specific training of our personnel, to protect this data. These safeguards vary depending on the sensitivity of the information at issue.
How can I choose the best privacy settings for my school and the school community?
When GoGuardian is active, it allows for multiple privacy settings options such as on Chromebooks only, school campus only, and/or during school time only. We recommend soliciting advice from your school community, such as board members, peers, teachers, students, parents, and others, about how best to implement educational technology software such as GoGuardian.
Has GoGuardian signed the Student Privacy Pledge?
Yes. GoGuardian has signed and abides by the Student Privacy Pledge. We pledge to carry out responsible stewardship and appropriate use of student personal information and in adherence to all laws applicable to us as school service providers.
To parents and educators,
At GoGuardian, it is our mission to help schools, educators, and students everywhere benefit from safer digital learning. We also want school communities to feel confident while utilizing these products that we care about the privacy and protection of their information.
What does data privacy mean to us exactly? To start, it means that we take great pride in keeping your school's and students' personal information safe and private. We constantly evaluate and improve upon our own privacy practices and standards by challenging ourselves and every person who works at GoGuardian to think closely about student privacy.
Data privacy also means that we work closely with schools to understand their needs and concerns. We know that it is essential to have meaningful conversations with schools, which is why GoGuardian's leadership regularly engages in feedback sessions directly with our school customers. We listen carefully to the ideas and critiques of every administrator, teacher, or school leader of GoGuardian. We also listen intently to the opinions of privacy leaders and parents. That feedback is critical to maintaining a strong relationship with you and our school communities.
We are here as a partner to you and your school community in helping students learn in the digital age. We welcome opportunities to connect directly with you.
Dedicated to protecting your privacy.
Our Privacy Team is constantly monitoring state and federal laws to ensure our policies meet, and often exceed, legal requirements. If you have any specific questions, we're happy to answer them for you.
