Commonly asked questions
We want you to feel comfortable with how we treat you. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most:
Who is GoGuardian?
We help thousands of K-12 schools maximize the learning potential of every student. Our software products help educators improve student outcomes, protect students from harmful and distracting content, and support mental health. With GoGuardian, educators can seamlessly connect students with engaging resources, manage instruction, and receive actionable insight into students’ individual learning needs. In addition, many schools use GoGuardian’s software as part of their compliance program with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (and state equivalents of CIPA) that requires schools to filter out certain types of harmful images and help monitor for compliance.
More specifically, GoGuardian offers these software products options for schools.
Your child’s school determines which product(s) from above to implement. Please reach out to your child’s school if you have questions about which product(s) that your child’s school uses.
We understand that there are a host of technologies that schools may use to educate your children, and that you may have privacy questions about those technologies. We have built our company to help provide a safer digital learning environment in schools and our obligation to protect student data is the foundation of our privacy philosophy. We are committed to protecting your child’s information, while also helping keep them safer online.
What is GoGuardian doing to protect my child’s privacy?
Our priority is to ensure your child’s personal information is safe and private. The following is a list of safeguards we have implemented to protect this information:
We DO NOT:
Sell, trade, or rent Personal Student Information.
Use Personal Student Information to market or advertise to students, parents, or anyone else.
Use Personal Student Information beyond purposes laid out in agreements.
Adhere to the Student Privacy Pledge.
Control access to Personal Student Information via requests made exclusively by schools
Maintain various administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect Personal Student Information.
Implement additional policies, procedures, requirements, and training for employees who need to access Personal Student Information to perform their job functions.
Use security technologies such as HTTPS across our products to protect data from threats.
Obtain certification by iKeepSafe as compliant in FERPA and California student privacy laws.
What type of personal information does GoGuardian collect from my child?
Does GoGuardian ever sell the data collected on my child?
What is GoGuardian doing to intervene if my child engages in conduct that might put them at risk?
Schools use GoGuardian products to help them identify situations in which students may be at risk and provide needed intervention or support. Since each school determines its own response protocols, we encourage you to reach out to your school administrators to learn more about how they specifically use GoGuardian.
When does GoGuardian operate on my child’s device or account?
GoGuardian can operate when your child is logged into his/her school-managed account and device and when your child is using school campus networks. Your child’s school can select further setting parameters that specifies when and where GoGuardian is active.
If you have questions about the GoGuardian settings that your child’s school has selected, please contact an administrator at your child’s school. We are happy to help support your child’s school with the information needed to answer any of your questions, but please communicate with your child’s school administrator.
If you want to log out of GoGuardian at home (e.g., after your child completes his/her homework), log them out of their school-managed account within the chrome browser, and, if your child logged into the device with his/her school-managed account (such as on a Chromebook or Windows device), log out of the device and log back in with your personal account).
Why does the GoGuardian shield logo show up in the Chrome browser?
You may have noticed that GoGuardian's shield logo appears as an icon near the top of the Chrome browser to the right of the URL bar (where you see the web address in Chrome). GoGuardian uses its logo to provide transparency to students—a reminder that they are logged into their school account, subject to their school’s acceptable technology use agreement. The GoGuardian extension icon means that your child’s school has implemented one or more of GoGuardian’s software. However, this extension logo does not indicate which GoGuardian product(s) that your child’s school has implemented or whether GoGuardian is active (dependent on your child’s school GoGuardian settings). Please reach out to your child’s school administrator if you have any questions and see the answer to the question: “When does GoGuardian operate on my child’s device or account?” for more information.
How does my child know the school requirements of using his/her school-managed account and/or device?
We strongly encourage schools to implement a Technology Acceptable Use Policy (and these policies are oftentimes signed by both parents/guardians and students) to inform students of how they should use their school accounts and devices. We also encourage schools to provide specific information about the use of GoGuardian directly to parents/guardians and students (e.g., through a letter home to parents). Please contact your school to see what steps they have taken to inform your child of technology use requirements.
How long is my child’s data kept for?
The Personal Student Information collected through GoGuardian is managed and owned by your school. Schools are subject to different laws and policies regarding data retention. Schools can request that GoGuardian delete Personal Student Information at any point during or after the school’s subscription to GoGuardian. You can work with your school to have them delete your child’s Personal Student Information collected through GoGuardian. After a school’s license ends, GoGuardian will de-identify (aggregate and anonymize) personal student information.
How do I request access, modification or deletion of my child’s Personal Student Information?
We honor requests to access, modify, and delete the Personal Student Information made by parents, guardians, and eligible students (students over eighteen-years-old) in accordance with applicable law. However, because your school has both a direct relationship with GoGuardian and a direct relationship with you, as a parent, guardian, or eligible student, we ask that you submit your request to your school’s administrator. The school administrator can contact GoGuardian and we can collaborate to help carry out your request.
I received a notification warning me that my child might be at risk. What is this?
If you are a parent or guardian looking for more information about GoGuardian Beacon, please contact your child’s school. Many times, the contact information for your child’s school is in the notification itself, or if not, your school’s general contact information should be available on the school’s website.

My student uses GoGuardian Teacher’s Video Conferencing feature, how do I know it Is this safe and secure?
GoGuardian and its video conferencing solution is designed to provide a safe and secure, invite-only virtual meeting space for teachers and their students. No one outside the class can join the calls and there are no meeting links required. In addition, video conferencing within GoGuardian Teacher gives students the ability to control how they would like to participate in the given session that involves video and audio and the ability to:
Decline calls initiated by the teacher
Disable their microphone (both before joining the call and anytime during the call)
Disable their webcam (both before joining the call and anytime during the call)
Leave a call at anytime
Decline to be recorded (students will see that a call is being recorded when they are prompted to join. By declining to be recorded, a student can still join the call and listen to the teacher, but the student’s microphone and webcam will be disabled)
Lastly, any recordings by teachers and students through GoGuardian are managed and owned through the school, but GoGuardian utilizes an industry-leading database company to enhance security.
If you have questions or want to learn more about how GoGuardian’s video conferencing solution will impact your student, please contact your school’s administrators.

That feedback is critical to maintaining a strong relationship with you and our school communities.
