School ownership of data

At GoGuardian, we firmly support the fact that school districts should and do own and control their students' "Personal Student Information". We take great efforts to collaborate with customers to provide them the ability to access, modify, and delete this data consistent with FERPA, COPPA, and all other applicable laws.

  • Schools utilize GoGuardian to help achieve compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
  • Schools own and control their Personal Student Information and can request deletion of Personal Student Information at any time.
  • Schools control their settings - such as where and when GoGuardian's services are active and which websites are on and off limits when using GoGuardian Admin.

Multi-pronged approach to security

GoGuardian uses a variety of technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect your data. For example, we use military-grade TLS encryption across our products and websites to protect personal information in transit, and we restrict access to Personal Student Information on a "need-to-know" basis.

  • GoGuardian maintains various administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect Personal Student Information, using advanced security technologies such as HTTPS across its products.
  • GoGuardian controls access to Personal Student Information but honors specific requests to access, modify, and delete the Personal Student Information made by parents/guardians, and eligible students (students over eighteen-years-old) in accordance with applicable law
  • GoGuardian Implements additional policies, procedures, requirements, and training for employees who need to access Personal Student Information to perform their job functions.

*Personal Student Information means information collected through the use of our Products for K-12 school purposes by a school or school district that may, alone or in combination with other available information, be reasonably used to identify a current or former student enrolled in a K-12 school or K-12 school district.

Commonly asked questions

We want you to feel comfortable with how we treat you.
Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most:

Who is GoGuardian?

We help thousands of K-12 schools maximize the learning potential of every student. Our software products help educators improve student outcomes, protect students from harmful and distracting content, and support mental health. With GoGuardian, educators can seamlessly connect students with engaging resources, manage instruction, and receive actionable insight into students’ individual learning needs. In addition, many schools use GoGuardian’s software as part of their compliance program with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (and state equivalents of CIPA) that requires schools to filter out certain types of harmful images and help monitor for compliance.

More specifically, GoGuardian offers these software products options for schools.

Your child’s school determines which product(s) from above to implement. Please reach out to your child’s school if you have questions about which product(s) that your child’s school uses.

We understand that there are a host of technologies that schools may use to educate your children, and that you may have privacy questions about those technologies. We have built our company to help provide a safer digital learning environment in schools and our obligation to protect student data is the foundation of our privacy philosophy. We are committed to protecting your child’s information, while also helping keep them safer online.

What is GoGuardian doing to protect my child’s privacy?

Our priority is to ensure your child’s personal information is safe and private. The following is a list of safeguards we have implemented to protect this information:

We DO NOT:

  • Sell, trade, or rent Personal Student Information.
  • Use Personal Student Information to market or advertise to students, parents, or anyone else.
  • Use Personal Student Information beyond purposes laid out in agreements.

We DO:

  • Adhere to the Student Privacy Pledge.
  • Control access to Personal Student Information via requests made exclusively by schools
  • Maintain various administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect Personal Student Information.
  • Implement additional policies, procedures, requirements, and training for employees who need to access Personal Student Information to perform their job functions.
  • Use security technologies such as HTTPS across our products to protect data from threats.
  • Obtain certification by iKeepSafe as compliant in FERPA and California student privacy laws.

What type of personal information does GoGuardian collect from my child?

Any information collected by GoGuardian that pertains to your child is done on behalf of your child’s school and based on the products that your child’s school uses. Information GoGuardian collects through your child’s school include their name, school email address, and associated browsing history when GoGuardian is active on your child’s school account or device or on campus using the school network. Based on the GoGuardian products that your school uses, GoGuardian collects additional information. For example, if your child's school deploys GoGuardian Teacher and has enabled the chat feature, GoGuardian collects those student-to-teacher chat messages. For a more thorough explanation of the data we collect, please visit the “Personal Student Information” section of our Product Privacy Policy. Your child’s individual school owns and controls Personal Student Information that GoGuardian accesses and collects and can be deleted at any time upon request or after the account closure.

Does GoGuardian ever sell the data collected on my child?

No. We never have and we never will. GoGuardian does not sell, rent, or trade any Personal Student Information. GoGuardian is not in the business of selling information to generate revenue; our business model is based on creating effective, helpful software solutions to schools. Please visit our Product Privacy Policy for more information.

What is GoGuardian doing to intervene if my child engages in conduct that might put them at risk?

Schools use GoGuardian products to help them identify situations in which students may be at risk and provide needed intervention or support. Since each school determines its own response protocols, we encourage you to reach out to your school administrators to learn more about how they specifically use GoGuardian.

When does GoGuardian operate on my child’s device or account?

GoGuardian can operate when your child is logged into his/her school-managed account and device and when your child is using school campus networks. Your child’s school can select further setting parameters that specifies when and where GoGuardian is active.

If you have questions about the GoGuardian settings that your child’s school has selected, please contact an administrator at your child’s school. We are happy to help support your child’s school with the information needed to answer any of your questions, but please communicate with your child’s school administrator.

If you want to log out of GoGuardian at home (e.g., after your child completes his/her homework), log them out of their school-managed account within the chrome browser, and, if your child logged into the device with his/her school-managed account (such as on a Chromebook or Windows device), log out of the device and log back in with your personal account).

Why does the GoGuardian shield logo show up in the Chrome browser?

You may have noticed that GoGuardian's shield logo appears as an icon near the top of the Chrome browser to the right of the URL bar (where you see the web address in Chrome). GoGuardian uses its logo to provide transparency to students—a reminder that they are logged into their school account, subject to their school’s acceptable technology use agreement. The GoGuardian extension icon means that your child’s school has implemented one or more of GoGuardian’s software. However, this extension logo does not indicate which GoGuardian product(s) that your child’s school has implemented or whether GoGuardian is active (dependent on your child’s school GoGuardian settings). Please reach out to your child’s school administrator if you have any questions and see the answer to the question: “When does GoGuardian operate on my child’s device or account?” for more information.

How does my child know the school requirements of using his/her school-managed account and/or device?

We strongly encourage schools to implement a Technology Acceptable Use Policy (and these policies are oftentimes signed by both parents/guardians and students) to inform students of how they should use their school accounts and devices. We also encourage schools to provide specific information about the use of GoGuardian directly to parents/guardians and students (e.g., through a letter home to parents). Please contact your school to see what steps they have taken to inform your child of technology use requirements.

How long is my child’s data kept for?

The Personal Student Information collected through GoGuardian is managed and owned by your school. Schools are subject to different laws and policies regarding data retention. Schools can request that GoGuardian delete Personal Student Information at any point during or after the school’s subscription to GoGuardian. You can work with your school to have them delete your child’s Personal Student Information collected through GoGuardian. After a school’s license ends, GoGuardian will de-identify (aggregate and anonymize) personal student information.

How do I request access, modification or deletion of my child’s Personal Student Information?

We honor requests to access, modify, and delete the Personal Student Information made by parents, guardians, and eligible students (students over eighteen-years-old) in accordance with applicable law. However, because your school has both a direct relationship with GoGuardian and a direct relationship with you, as a parent, guardian, or eligible student, we ask that you submit your request to your school’s administrator. The school administrator can contact GoGuardian and we can collaborate to help carry out your request.

I received a notification warning me that my child might be at risk. What is this?

If you are a parent or guardian looking for more information about GoGuardian Beacon, please contact your child’s school. Many times, the contact information for your child’s school is in the notification itself, or if not, your school’s general contact information should be available on the school’s website.

If you or someone you know may be struggling with suicidal thoughts, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline '1-800-273-TALK (8255)' or text TALK to 741741 at the Crisis Text Line. They’re here for you. If you have an emergency, call 911.

GoGuardian is a proud signatory of the Student Privacy Pledge—a K-12 school service provider pledge to be responsible stewards of student information. The Pledge is a list of commitments that school service providers can make to affirm that K-12 student information is kept private and secure. It has been endorsed by President Obama, the National PTA, and the National School Boards Association. My student uses GoGuardian Teacher’s Video Conferencing feature, how do I know it's safe and secure?

GoGuardian and its video conferencing solution is designed to provide a safe and secure, invite-only virtual meeting space for teachers and their students. No one outside the class can join the calls and there are no meeting links required. In addition, video conferencing within GoGuardian Teacher gives students the ability to control how they would like to participate in the given session that involves video and audio and the ability to:

  • Decline calls initiated by the teacher
  • Disable their microphone (both before joining the call and anytime during the call)
  • Disable their webcam (both before joining the call and anytime during the call)
  • Leave a call at anytime
  • Decline to be recorded (students will see that a call is being recorded when they are prompted to join. By declining to be recorded, a student can still join the call and listen to the teacher, but the student’s microphone and webcam will be disabled)

Lastly, any recordings by teachers and students through GoGuardian are managed and owned through the school, but GoGuardian utilizes an industry-leading database company to enhance security.

If you have questions or want to learn more about how GoGuardian’s video conferencing solution will impact your student, please contact your school’s administrators.

I live in the European Economic Area. Is GoGuardian aware of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”)?

No. Schools own their Personal Student Information. We provide powerful, easy-to-use content filtering and classroom management tools to help keep students safe online.

Does GoGuardian sell Personal Student Information or advertise using Personal Student Information?

Also, we will not use this information for any purposes prohibited by the Family Educational and Privacy Rights Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99.3) ("FERPA"), California Business & Professions Code section 22584 ("SOPIPA"), and the California Education Code section 49073.1.

How does GoGuardian help schools communicate about GoGuardian to parents/guardians and students?

The privacy of our schools and students matters deeply to us. Our goal is to be as transparent as possible about all of our data privacy practices, especially when it comes to specifying the information that we collect, share, use, and release, and how we’re keeping your data safe. We take our duty to protect your information to heart, so please review our Product Privacy Policy and remember that we are always here to answer your questions.

In addition, we understand transparency is of equal importance to schools, as they each know their students, teachers, and parent community best. Because of this, we have taken steps to help you communicate about GoGuardian to parents and students. For example, GoGuardian’s Parent Communication Center provides template letters for your school to use to help inform parents. GoGuardian also recommends that each school send home: (1) the GoGuardian COPPA Notice & Consent Form (even if your school only serves students over thirteen years of age); and (2) your school’s acceptable technology use agreement signed by students and their parents/guardians that explains your school’s filtering and monitoring policies as well as how students should be using their school accounts and devices.

GoGuardian's shield logo also appears as an icon near the top of the Chrome browser to the right of the URL bar (where you see the web address in Chrome). GoGuardian uses its logo to provide transparency to students—a reminder that they are logged into their school’s account, subject to their school’s acceptable technology use agreement.

What steps does GoGuardian take to protect student information?

We are fully committed to the security and privacy of student data and protecting you and your school from attempts to compromise it. We utilize stringent technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect all personal information, including specific training of our personnel, to protect this data. These safeguards vary depending on the sensitivity of the information at issue.

How can I choose the best privacy settings for my school and the school community?

When GoGuardian is active, it allows for multiple privacy settings options such as on Chromebooks only, school campus only, and/or during school time only. We recommend soliciting advice from your school community, such as board members, peers, teachers, students, parents, and others, about how best to implement educational technology software such as GoGuardian.

Has GoGuardian signed the Student Privacy Pledge?

We recommend reaching out to your school administrators to learn more about whether your school has implemented other GoGuardian products and those specific settings set in place for them.

Are my students notified when I am monitoring their devices with GoGuardian Teacher?

Yes. As soon as you start a classroom session, students in your active class session receive a pop-up notification on their device indicating they have joined the GoGuardian classroom session. If a student is late and logs in after your session has started, the pop-up appears as soon as they log in.

Why does the GoGuardian shield logo show up in the Chrome browser?

The GoGuardian extension icon means that your school has implemented one or more of GoGuardian’s software. Please reach out to your school administrator if you have any questions.

How can I ensure that my school uses the appropriate privacy settings for its students?

School administrators can set a schedule and IP address on GoGuardian Teacher to correlate with the school calendar and school location. We invite you to ask your school administrators about your school’s settings.

What are best practices when using GoGuardian Teacher to protect my students’ privacy?

Teachers are the experts of their specific classrooms and we have collected these tips/best practices from talking with our school customers who use GoGuardian Teacher:

  • Request that administrators restrict sessions to correlate with the school schedule and set IP restrictions for school location
  • Mark your students as absent when they are not in class
  • Teach your students about digital citizenship and digital responsibility
  • Report any potential issue or privacy or security concern to your administrator, principal, or other school leader and follow the guidelines for any issues that mandated reporting
  • Protect the confidentiality of student data

What should I do if a student or his/her parents/guardians requests access, deletion, or modification of data?
