What Paper Hall Passes Are Missing When it Comes to Student Safety

A slip of paper shouldn’t be your safety plan. There are a variety of reasons a student may need to leave a classroom. Teachers know better than anyone how vital restroom runs, trips to the nurse, meetings with counselors, and passes to various support classrooms are.
Year after year, most schools make use of whatever they can find for learners to carry during their walks across campus to indicate they have permission to move about. But this system of relying on a piece of paper (or toilet seat, anyone?) to serve as a hall pass leaves major gaps in student safety and accountability. A simple slip of paper or random object will not provide the visibility necessary to ensure learners are being responsible with the freedom given to them.
Blind spots that require revealing
Physical hall passes may be tangible, but they don’t cover every blind spot. A few not-so-obvious risks include:
- Unsupervised roaming: It’s not unheard of for students to say they are going to one place, only to take a “detour” or two. Kids will be kids, but this lack of oversight can lead to potential safety hazards.
- Inconsistent enforcement: Individual teachers often use different pass methods. Varying rules lead to inconsistency and difficulties in campus-wide enforcement.
- Lack of visibility: Educators are already juggling so much. Relying on memory to track where a student was headed and how long they’ve been out makes it easy to lose track of a student, delaying support if an issue arises. This also causes another level of complication, should the school office need to track down a student quickly.
Teachers work hard to build trust, and they need a system that backs them up. A paper note alone doesn’t give everyone the same quick view of where a student is headed or for how long, and can make a systematic campus-wide policy difficult to maintain when it comes to students traveling during instructional time. Without clear insights into where a student is going and when they leave the classroom, it’s harder to respond quickly if things go wrong.
It’s time for a modern solution
Schools have already adopted technology to support student engagement, but what about the safety of those under their care? It’s time to invest in a solution that will help bring peace of mind to campus.
With a digital hall pass system, districts can:
- Minimize incidents of misconduct or wandering
- Create standardized policies across classrooms
- Improve accountability for students and staff
- Provide better visibility, creating a more robust picture of what goes on in your halls
