How GoGuardian Admin is Staying on the Cutting-Edge of Student Safety

At GoGuardian, we’re always pushing forward to make learning safer, smarter, and more effective for students and educators. As online threats continue to evolve, we’ve been watching, acting, and evolving to ensure we are ready to protect the schools we serve. This is why we’ve launched a complete overhaul of the website categorization system that is the powerhouse behind GoGuardian Admin.
This system helps Admin categorize millions of websites to assist IT administrators in making critical filtering decisions every day. In its second version, it’s stronger, smarter, and faster than ever, ready to help users defend their districts against digital threats.
Evolving to meet a changing digital environment
The original version of this categorization system served schools for years, helping shape the filtering experience for thousands of districts. Over time, we introduced several upgrades, such as our LLM-powered categorization engine and specialized machine learning models trained to detect school-inappropriate content like proxies and games, to keep ahead of evolving web content.
Updating to serve you even better
This categorization system isn’t just an upgrade -- it’s a complete rebuild, thoughtfully redesigned from the ground up. It prioritizes content categories hierarchically, starting with the most critical areas such as pornography and games, and extending to other significant categories like entertainment, shopping, educational, and well beyond. This allows GoGuardian Admin to respond faster and more accurately to the most sensitive filtering concerns.
In just its first eight days, it processed 7.5 million categorization requests across 3.3 million unique domains, adding nearly 300,000 new domains to our database. That’s a huge leap forward in visibility and control for our users. We now process 489 million browsing events and add around 30,000 new domains daily.
Real-world impact in schools like yours
For IT administrators, accuracy and speed are vital to catching what may impact students and classrooms daily. Mislabeling of educational sites, for instance, may lead to a disruption of learning and compromise filtering reliability.
Our categorization system directly addresses these frustrations. With expanded category support and faster classification, schools can now rely on more accurate filtering, especially when using the “Block Uncategorized” feature.
You spoke, we listened - and acted
We launched our updated categorization system with four clear goals:
- Improve accuracy
- Categorize more sites, faster
- Support customers using Block Uncategorized
- Reduce operational costs
So far, we’re delivering across the board:
- Our newest version categorizes 1,800% more sites daily than version one.
- It identifies 200% more games, 1,860% more pornography, and 1,400% more entertainment.
- It’s more accurate, with fewer false positives across all categories.
The work of the GoGuardian Admin team is already making a measurable difference for over 7,500 GoGuardian Admin customers, all of whom have been automatically upgraded to the new system.
What’s next?
In the coming months, we’ll continue evolving with:
- A new government category
- Specialized filtering for YouTube downloaders, which students often use to bypass YouTube restrictions
These updates are part of our ongoing mission to help schools stay ahead of the curve and keep students safe in an ever-changing digital world.
